Brave Afghan teenage girl who lost parents says ready to fight Taliban

The undated photo shows 15-year-old Afghan girl Qamar Gul.

An Afghan teenage girl who killed two Taliban gunmen in retaliation for murdering her parents says she is ready to fight the militants if they attacked her.

The militants stormed the home of the 15-year-old Qamar Gul last week in a village in the central province of Ghor, and "took my father and mother outside and shot them several times. I was terrified," Gul told AFP by telephone from a relatives home on Wednesday, recounting the events of that night.

Officials said Guls father was the village chief and was killed by the militants because he was a supporter of the Kabul government.

But moments later, "anger took over," she added.

"I picked up the gun we had at home, went to the door and shot them," she said, noting that her 12-year-old brother helped her and took the gun from her and shot one of the militants when he tried to return fire, forcing him to escape injured.

The militants later returned to attack Guls residence, but they were confronted with several villagers and pro-government militiamen, and eventually fled following a lengthy firefight.

"I no longer fear them and Im ready to fight them again," Gul said.

She has been praised by many Afghans on social media.

President Ashraf Ghani has also praised the girl for "defending her family against a ruthless enemy," his spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told AFP.

Taliban confirmed an attack had been carried out in the area of the incident, but denied that any of its militants had been killed by a woman.

The Taliban militant group has long been known to target the citizens it suspects of being pro-government.

In recent months, the militants have carried out near-daily attacks across various parts of Afghanistan. On Monday, at least eight soldiers were killed when a bomber detonated an explosives-packed truck close to an Afghan military convoy in Sayed Abad district of Wardak Province, near the capital Kabul.

Official data shows that Taliban bombings and other assaults have increased 70 percent since the militant group signed a ‘peace deal with the United States in February.
